How to use matcha to help with meditation
Did you know the practice of making matcha is traditionally used by Zen Buddhist monks for meditation?
While many of us grab a matcha latte from a bustling coffee shop, the monks used making matcha as a way to quiet the mind and be only focused on making the tea.
As I’m not the best at quieting my mind when I’m laying in bed or sitting on my yoga mat, I figured I’d try it out. And it actually was incredibly relaxing.
To practice it yourself, here are some things to notice and pay attention to:
- The color and scent of the matcha powder.
- How the maple syrup slowly pours from your measuring spoon into the cup.
- Carefully pouring hot water over the matcha, noticing how the powder bubbles up.
- Gently whisking the matcha, syrup, and boiling water together. Watching the matcha powder slowly dissolve.
- How the oat milk froths up and gets hot.
- The flavor and sensation of the matcha latte in your mouth as you take each sip.
And similar to yoga, it’s okay if other thoughts creep in. Just acknowledge them and tell yourself that you’ll come back to them later.
Matcha latte benefits
Unlike green tea, when you drink matcha, you’re actually drinking the whole tea leaves – rather than just the water that the leaves have been steeped in.
This, as well as differences in how the tea leaves are grown, is why matcha is a more concentrated source of antioxidants and other beneficial plant compounds.
Some health benefits associated with drinking matcha tea include:
- Rich source of antioxidants.
- Contains approximately 68 mg of caffeine
- May help repair muscle damage after exercise.
- May reduce damage caused by UVB radiation
- Can boost energy levels.
- May help reduce stress levels.
- May improve brain functioning and memory.
- Can aid weight loss efforts.
Ingredients Used to Make a Healthy Matcha Latte
- Ceremonial Grade Matcha Powder: I recommend using a ceremonial grade matcha powder for best flavor and texture. This is the one I like best.
- Pure Maple Syrup: I love the flavor of maple in the morning, but local honey will work too.
- Unsweetened Oat Milk: Any milk alternative will work, just note that different types may froth differently.
- CBD Oil: I used 1 full dropper of a 33-mg THC-free CBD tincture. Option to use more, less, or leave it out all together. I occasionally add CBD as a way to help calm my anxiety in the morning.
How to Make a Matcha Latte
- You’ll start by placing matcha powder, maple syrup, CBD oil and boiling water in a mug.
- Next, whisk the mixture together using a bamboo or metal whisk until matcha is completely dissolved.
- Heat oat milk. You have a few options: Bring milk to a gentle simmer on the stove, heat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, use a frothing wand (see more ways to froth milk in this post)
- Pour milk into mug, taste, and add more sweetener to taste. Sip and enjoy!
